What are you going to do?
Take a few selfies in your new shoes and post on Facebook?
Go out for dinner?
Crack open the champagne?
I am guessing it will be more a case of saving lives.
Carrying out major operations.
Getting the road traffic accident.
Cleaning up sick.
Working a double shift.
Skipping lunch and grabbing a Twix for dinner.
You see, while our amazing NHS is 70 today, I doubt it will be celebrating as we do.
The people who receive the care.
Who turn up at A&E.
The ones who are given treatment and sent home with medicine.
Let’s not pretend that the service is perfect, but at the same time, the NHS is pretty damn amazing.
Over a million trained, skilled staff work for the NHS and make lives worth living.
They take away the pain and the fear.
They work even when they should be clocking off.
They rush back to work when there is a crisis.
They make life easier even when it is crashing around us.
They come round late at night to make sure your child is comfortable.
They push the boundaries and make the impossible, possible.
They remember your name.
The NHS is amazing and I for one will be raising a glass tonight and saying cheers to everyone who has ever helped my family, and I hope you will too.
Happy 70th birthday NHS, you rock!
